Calgary has a huge love of Asian inspired Soup Houses, and I would confidently say some of the best on the world. From King’s legendary Cantonese inspired Wor Won Ton with outlets all over the city, to Vietnamese Pho, (noodle soup), at every corner of this town. We now have Japan represented here in Calgary with Goro + Gun. Unique, delicious thick and silky broths…mine was pork…De-Lish! Filled with rich meats, smoked eggs, fish and Ramen noodles, that is so good and filling. If Sake is your thing, there is over 30 varities to choose from featuring varieties and regions from where they are brewed. I love the taster menu, where you get 3 X 1 ounce to try. Weekday Happy Hour is $5 Sushi and Sake! For all you Sushi crazed Calgarians..the Sushi here is KILLER! Mouth Watering, traditional to trendy chef inspired combos, that are works of art combined with fresh, quality ingredients. The head Chef Tomo Mitsuno spent 7 years working at a Michelin starred restaurant in Osaka, and belongs to an elite group of chefs certified to prepare a deadly blowfish called fugu. Yikes!
The hip interior and Japanese trends are on point here…this place is both fun, and reasonably priced. Located in the Core, it is a welcome end to a great day walking or shopping down town for some comfort food and drink. If you are grabbing a quick lunch, they have a stand up noodle bar that offers a $10 Bowl any time of the day. There is not many places where you feel so welcome either…with their tradition of every staff member shouting out welcome as soon as you arrive! Fun! I love Goro + Gun! Okawari Oishii!
In Calgary, Inglewood is my fave…cause it is the real deal…original Calgary…old Atlantic Avenue, now 9th! The Best Calgary Breakfast at Bite is Bliss!!!! Absolutely delish; Manns local farm eggs prepared in a Breakfast Sandwich or Burrito with some fresh fruit on the side…for $6.49! Not only do I love the price…I love the number…get it? Bite is amazing!…part restaurant, part deli, part bakery, part specialty grocery store…and it is all delicious! Bite resides in the new chic, Atlantic Art Block with an amazing interior dedicated to art. The building is unique in the fact that it houses the only non commercial, Contemporary Art Gallery in Calgary. The Esker Foundation, (free admission) Contemporary Art Galley…who my Art student daughter claims to be a unique and amazing concept for new artists!…holds three collections a year; Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer! The building’s retail and office rental revenue pays for the modern art gallery’s 15,000 square foot space…not only does this building have an art gallery in it, but it is also an art gallery unto itself. Each floor boasts a uniquely designed mezzanine that houses art on display from the personal collection of Jim and Susan Hill. This was the couple of visionaries who proved how business and philanthropy can work together to create cultural innovation in this hip urban community. Well done in every way…
Why do I love bread soooooooooo much…why? My waistline certainly does not need it! Bread glorious bread…so many bread options here at the Lazy Loaf and kettle and the sandwiches…! http://lazyloafandkettle.com/
Everything on the menu is amazing…the breakie is divine, and the soup quite excellent, but after the meal…the very best is for last…the DESSERTS!
All home made, all amazing!!! Really, really good…and classics. This is the place your Grama will like to come and your kids…basically anyone who loves traditional baking. Make sure you take some of their bread home! This is some of the best bread I have ever had! Every variety…All of them! Things sell out fast…my faves are usually gone by 2:00…so get here early! I have been disappointed enough times to say that. If you are lucky enough to get a seat…don’t miss taking in the art on the walls…it’s all for sale! If you love art like I do, you would be amazed at some of the pieces for sale…great works for a great price! Even my college age, art student daughter agrees! Great pieces can be found here at The Lazy Loaf & Kettle…such a great spot!

If I am on the subject of bread…I have to give a bread shout out to Glamorgan Bakery http://glamorganbakery.com/…Cheese Buns. As my husband and daughter are cheese bun addicts…I have bought every Cheese Bun available in this city…and these are the very best!
OK I admit it…I LOVE Salad Bars…the idea of unlimited combinations on one plate drives me wild! (Chinese Buffets used to…when I could digest it that is…aahhhh back in my twenties!) Smuggler’s Inn on McLeod offers the BEST salad bar in Calgary period! The bread sticks…well they are no joke, but the…real…reason…we come to “Smugs” for lunch is the STEAK SOUP!!! Ya did I mention I like soup?
Well I do and this is the most beautiful, savory, rich, velvet like Beef soup like no other…with AAA Prime Rib bits floating throughout the broth..made from the gods…it is simply amazing soup! The bread sticks with a plate of salad is a meal fit for a king! Available every single day at lunch!
Smuggler’s has always had the reputation for lunch, but their Prime Rib, is the Top Cut in Cowtown…to be sure! They are the masters at it! Smuggler’s dark, woodsy wall paneling, fire light and the legendary Henry the 8th, velvet upholstered, nail head, 100 lb throne chairs…make you feel like a king or queen when you sink in the super comfy seat…it just makes the Beef taste that much Beefier. Love Smugs…great lunch and Sunday night Prime Rib treat!
You would never know by the bland stucco, block building on Edmonton Trail, (least of all advertised as another location of King’s Won Ton soup), that this was an AMAZING breakfast place! http://www.kingsrestaurant.net/I remember 30 years ago lining up in the original Barlow location for the amazing soup!…the soup…had to have the soup…elixir of the gods! This is what real soup tastes like? Soup like no other…soup I would gage against Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi anyday…and I really, really, like soup! Standing in line was always amazing to watch the awesome machine, producing, bowl, after bowl, after bowl of perfect soup…perfect…every single time…and deciding if I could actually eat some pork dumplings too…cause oh my…just perfect dumplings…all while someone’s elderly father sat in the corner, quickly and expertly made Won Tons. I know they were being sold all most as quickly as he could produce them…delicious and delicate every time…people in line paying for their orders ahead, would leave with 20 orders in a moving box, to deliver DT in an office tower some where. Where an excited group waited for the ultimate lunch treat. The King’s machine did not stop for hours and hours…just a real great joint, (as my pop would say…hee hee), sure the old truck stop ambiance of the original Barlow Trail location offers it’s own individual charm…but no one goes for the ambiance, the cheap finishes do the job, and besides no one looks up from their bowl to notice anyway! Lol! The New’ish, (May 2015), Edmonton Trail location shows how much they have learned over the years! What an amazing transformation at this location. So lovely inside, perfectly designed and finished…love to know who did the interior design work… It has the same delicious food, now with an incredible breakfast menu. Not eggs and bacon, no…Spolumbo’s sausage with Whole Weat, Banana Pancakes…ya pretty amazing. My hubby had a meaty, egg scramble and I wanted it too…even though I left some of my own food behind…
Barlow Trail offers breakfast and “Western Dishes” as well….but not like this. King’s on Edmonton trail offers something new…an amazing breakfast served 9-3! Same smiles and efficiency like at all the King’s but this has a hip industrial interior, nothing like any other of it’s locations. Everything inside is modern, chique, new & cool…back lit booths, with great finishes and hip vibe without the pretense…or most of all the price! Twelve bucks buys you an amazing breakfast with a smoothie! Hard to beat this value! The food speaks for itself…it actually tastes better than it looks!!!! I Love King’s! A new breakfast for lunch hangout for me and my hubby!
It would be absolutely irresponsible of me…not to pay respect to the soup created by King’s the masters of the Wor Won Ton bowl…time and time again…perfect every single time. It is a right of passage in Calgary culinary delights!
