Calgary’s King of Breakfast…yes I mean the Won Ton King!

20160207_123747You would never know by the bland stucco, block building on Edmonton Trail, (least of all advertised as another location of King’s Won Ton soup), that this was an AMAZING breakfast place!  http://www.kingsrestaurant.net/I remember 30 years ago lining up in the original Barlow location for the amazing soup!…the soup…had to have the soup…elixir of the gods!  This is what real soup tastes like?  Soup like no other…soup I would gage against Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi anyday…and I really, really, like soup!   Standing in line was always amazing to watch the awesome machine, producing, bowl, after bowl, after bowl of perfect soup…perfect…every single time…and deciding if I could actually eat some pork dumplings too…cause oh my…just perfect dumplings…all while someone’s elderly father sat in the corner, quickly and expertly made Won Tons.  I know they were being sold all most as quickly as he could produce them…delicious and delicate every time…people in line paying for their orders ahead, would leave with 20 orders in a moving box, to deliver DT in an office tower some where.  Where an excited group waited for the ultimate lunch treat.  The King’s machine did not stop for hours and hours…just a real great joint, (as my pop would say…hee hee), sure the old truck stop ambiance of the original Barlow Trail location offers it’s own individual charm…but no one goes for the ambiance, the cheap finishes do the job, and besides no one looks up from their bowl to notice anyway! Lol!  The New’ish, (May 2015), Edmonton Trail location shows how much they have learned over the years!  What an amazing transformation at this location.  So lovely inside, perfectly designed and finished…love to know who did the interior design work… It has the same delicious food, now with an incredible breakfast menu. Not eggs and bacon, no…Spolumbo’s sausage with Whole Weat, Banana Pancakes…ya pretty amazing.  My hubby had a meaty, egg scramble and I wanted it too…even though I left some of my own food behind…

Barlow Trail offers breakfast and “Western Dishes” as well….but not like this.  King’s on Edmonton trail offers something new…an amazing breakfast served 9-3!  Same smiles and efficiency like at all the King’s but this has a hip industrial interior, nothing like any other of it’s locations.  Everything inside is modern, chique, new & cool…back lit booths, with great finishes and hip vibe without the pretense…or most of all the price!  Twelve bucks buys you an amazing breakfast with a smoothie!  Hard to beat this value!  The food speaks for itself…it actually tastes better than it looks!!!! I Love King’s!  A new breakfast for lunch hangout for me and my hubby!

It would be absolutely irresponsible of me…not to pay respect to the soup created by King’s the masters of the Wor Won Ton bowl…time and time again…perfect every single time.  It is a right of passage in Calgary culinary delights!

Dining in the Office

20160117_224302

What could be better than hot and tasty pepper chicken, veg and curry chick peas…in January…when you can’t…won’t face driving winter roads at lunch time. A sandwich…when it’s cold out? Soup? Mmmm chemicals and I am still hungry! Perfect Prep makes incredible lunches for a budget! It may be cold outside, but a wonderful meal to look forward to during a hard day in the office, on site, anywhere… Perfect Prep makes healthy lunches and I freeze them by recipe in bags in my deep freezer, pick a different one out every night for the next day. Great way to count calories and try to trim the Christmas fat…or baking with butter as I call it! 5 different recipes and they are so good!!!

20160117_22325620160117_22295620160117_223707

Everyone envies me in the lunch room at the office and I keep telling them…order and freeze them cause they cost the same as if you made them yourself! No MSG, all organic, and hearty!. It is the only time I truly can dine at my desk…no dress code in effect!

SaladBarweb

So when the weather turns warm…and you just have to have a salad…It’s off to the salad bar!  I just love getting extra tomatoes without asking…just a sprinkle of onions…no…no not too many…just enough for that tangy crunch every so often. I LOVE my salads the best! Other pre-made salads are my last resort and if I have to…Superstore rocks those out the best against every grocery store, but Co-Op is the DOMINATOR of Salad Bars! Safeway…the salad recipes are good…but usually stale`ish, small and pricey…however the Safeway Signature Sandwich Bar…my god!  I always pick one up for my ski day…and it tastes like heaven on the hill!  (I will save the sandwich rant for another day), back to salads…mostly…all pre-made salads are ok… but usually too heavy here…too light there…my way is always the right way.

great-salad-bar-just

With the cost of produce in Alberta…the salad bar can often give you better value to get exclusively your favorite salad items, the way you like them…granted in smaller amounts, but no waste.  Two Large Salad Bar Salads usually gives hubby and I supper, (with some bread.) and lunch the next day.  It`s not just rabbit food for me either…oh no…load it up with chicken, eggs, nuts, cheese…oh yes cheese!…black olives are kinda like the onions. Depending on the time of year throw in some berries or melon…Melon and Poppy Seed dressing tastes like summer!  I love the Salad Bar…my favorite recipe is as follows:

Bed of greens…preferably spinach…romaine is the last choice.

Next Red Peppers…scattered all over the greens.

Just an ever so light and random sprinkle of finely cut Red Onion.

Tomatoes, preferably cut, not the grape style…can be bitter, but LOTS…since child birth…I have asked for…extra tomatoes please.

Mini Bocconcini Cheese about 6 balls all shoved in the NW corner

Sprinkle any shredded Cheese all over the salad as well please…

Sprinkle with Cooked Chicken like the Red Peppers

Hard Boiled Eggs, I like about 1 full Egg in the NE Corner

sprinkle with Walnuts or Sunflower Seeds

Sprinkle top with Bacon Bits

Chick Peas mixed equally with black beans in the SW Corner

Pickled Beets in the SE Corner…I treat those like dessert and eat them last.

Poppy Seed Dressing all over…Renee`s is best! YUM-MY!!!!

…I love soup!

20160123_135651

I love soup…all soup, but mostly Vietnamese Soup…and I have LOTS of choices in Calgary…one of my faves is Pho Kim.  …funny story today…I had a work meeting with a Mr. Kim, had lunch at Pho Kim…and tonight going out with my awesome friend – Kim! That`s a lot of Kims! Hahaha

I just love their soup…it is divine.  I never, ever regret soup here of any kind, but my favorite order is Chicken Noodle with Spring Rolls …not salad rolls, which is my norm…only cause it is one of the places that still offers lettuce and basil as an option.

20160123_134153

I really don`t enjoy spring rolls without lettuce and basil…always seems like it`s missing something.  Chinese restaurants have not learned that yet, and for that reason I rarely eat spring rolls anywhere else.  At Pho Kim, I can order the huge crispy pieces of lettuce with basil leaves, rolled tightly around the deep fried goodness of their tasty spring rolls.  Dip in the sweet, tangy hot sauce with a hot and cool crunch…all at the same time! Yum!

20160123_134025

The chicken soup broth is the best part of the bowl, but the tender chicken is juicy and the perfectly al dente…(can I use that Italian expression about Vietnamese Cuisine?), rice noodles are DELICIOUS…which are kinda square…so they don’t slide of the chop sticks very easily…which means getting more stuffed in my mouth at one time! Yum!  I love soup!  I love Pho Kim!
